Symptoms
- Rolling back an upgrade of ESXi 5.x fails.
- If you reboot and press Shift-R, you see the error:
No alternative hypervisor to roll back to
Cause
You cannot roll back an ESXi 5.x installation after an upgrade.
ESXi 5.x uses the same installer for fresh installations and upgrades. If the installer finds an existing ESX/ESXi 4.x installation, it performs an upgrade. Pressing Shift+R after the upgrade does not perform a roll back due to the differences between the ESX/ESXi 4.x and the 5.x boot loaders.
Resolution
After an upgrade to ESXi 5.x is complete, you cannot roll back the installation.
To go back to the previous version, you need to perform a new installation.
Caution: When you perform the new installation, all configurations, and possibly virtual machines, contained on the host may be lost.
